Imran Ghory has used data on the largest prime gaps to confirm the conjecture for &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;n&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; up to 1.3002 x 10&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;16&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Prime Numbers: The Most Mysterious Figures in Math&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, John Wiley &amp;amp; Sons, Inc., 2005, p.13.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Using a table of [[Prime_gaps#Numerical_results|maximal gaps]] and the above gap inequality, the confirmation value can be extended to past 1.4 x 10&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;18&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

The discrete function &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;A_n = \sqrt{p_{n+1}}-\sqrt{p_n}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; is plotted in the figures opposite. The high-water marks for &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;A_n&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; occur for n = 1, 2, and 4, with &amp;#039;&amp;#039;A&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;4&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; ≈ 0.670873..., with no larger value among the first 10&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;5&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt; primes. Since the Andrica function decreases asymptotically as &amp;#039;&amp;#039;n&amp;#039;&amp;#039; increases, a prime gap of ever increasing size is needed to make the difference large as &amp;#039;&amp;#039;n&amp;#039;&amp;#039; becomes large. It therefore seems highly likely the conjecture is true, although this has not yet been proven.&lt;br /&gt;

The largest possible solution &amp;#039;&amp;#039;x&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is easily seen to occur for &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;n=1&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;, when &amp;#039;&amp;#039;x&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;max&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt;=1. The smallest solution &amp;#039;&amp;#039;x&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is conjectured to be &amp;#039;&amp;#039;x&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;min&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; ≈ 0.567148... {{OEIS|id=A038458}} which occurs  for &amp;#039;&amp;#039;n&amp;#039;&amp;#039; = 30.&lt;br /&gt;
