Points sampled from three von Mises-Fisher distributions on the sphere (blue: κ=1, green: κ=10, red: κ=100). The mean directions μ are shown with arrows.

In directional statistics, the von Mises–Fisher distribution is a probability distribution on the (p1)-dimensional sphere in p. If p=2 the distribution reduces to the von Mises distribution on the circle.

The probability density function of the von Mises-Fisher distribution for the random p-dimensional unit vector x is given by:

fp(x;μ,κ)=Cp(κ)exp(κμTx)

where κ0,μ=1 and the normalization constant Cp(κ) is equal to

Cp(κ)=κp/21(2π)p/2Ip/21(κ).

where Iv denotes the modified Bessel function of the first kind and order v. If p=3, the normalization constant reduces to

C3(κ)=κ4πsinhκ=κ2π(eκeκ).

Note that the equations above apply for polar coordinates only.

The parameters μ and κ are called the mean direction and concentration parameter, respectively. The greater the value of κ, the higher the concentration of the distribution around the mean direction μ. The distribution is unimodal for κ>0, and is uniform on the sphere for κ=0.

The von Mises-Fisher distribution for p=3, also called the Fisher distribution, was first used to model the interaction of dipoles in an electric field (Mardia, 2000). Other applications are found in geology, bioinformatics, and text mining.

Estimation of parameters

A series of N independent measurements xi are drawn from a von Mises-Fisher distribution. Define

Ap(κ)=Ip/2(κ)Ip/21(κ).

Then (Sra, 2011) the maximum likelihood estimates of μ and κ are given by

μ=iNxi||iNxi||,
κ=Ap1(R¯).

Thus κ is the solution to

Ap(κ)=||iNxi||N=R¯.

A simple approximation to κ is

κ^=R¯(pR¯2)1R¯2,

but a more accurate measure can be obtained by iterating the Newton method a few times

κ^1=κ^Ap(κ^)R¯1Ap(κ^)2p1κ^Ap(κ^),
κ^2=κ^1Ap(κ^1)R¯1Ap(κ^1)2p1κ^1Ap(κ^1).
